Clinical practice and academic career

Dr. Mohan S. Gundeti is a pediatric urologist whose work brings together clinical care, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, complex urinary tract reconstruction, research and international surgical education. He has directed Pediatric Urology at Comer Children’s Hospital, University of Chicago, since 2007.

Before moving to Chicago, he served as a consultant pediatric urologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London in 2005 and at St. George’s Hospital and Medical School from 2006 to 2007. He joined the University of Chicago as an assistant professor in Surgery and Pediatrics in 2007, advanced to associate professor, and became Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2015. His Obstetrics & Gynecology appointment is in the Section of Fetal Medicine. His CV also lists a consultant pediatric urology role at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Chicago from 2017.

Education and specialist training

Dr. Gundeti completed his medical education in Maharashtra, India, earning his MBBS in 1991 and his MS in General Surgery in 1995 at Shivaji University, Kolhapur. He trained in general surgery at Dr. V. M. Medical College and Hospital in Solapur, followed by an MCh in Urology at the University of Mumbai and senior registrar training at Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences from 1995 to 1998. He subsequently undertook a senior fellowship in urological oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.

His further training in the United Kingdom included adolescent and pediatric urology at University College London, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Oxford Radcliffe Hospital, and Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital. He received the Fellowship of the European Board of Urology in 2003, FRCS in Urology in 2005, and the Fellowship of the European Academy of Paediatric Urology in 2007.

Research and surgical innovation

His research examines the techniques, safety, functional outcomes and long-term results of pediatric robotic reconstruction. His published work includes robotic pyeloplasty, ureteral reimplantation, heminephrectomy, augmentation cystoplasty and Mitrofanoff appendicovesicostomy, alongside studies of congenital urological conditions and multidisciplinary care.

His scholarship includes single-center and multicenter studies, systematic reviews, surgical videos and textbook chapters. Recent work includes a 15-year experience with robotic pediatric augmentation cystoplasty, long-term outcomes of modifications to robotic Mitrofanoff surgery, and a 2026 paper reflecting on two decades of pediatric robotic urology. His research projects have also explored machine learning in pediatric hydronephrosis.

Teaching and international collaboration

Dr. Gundeti teaches visiting surgeons through the Pediatric Urology Robotic Mini-Fellowship at the University of Chicago, combining observation, discussion, simulation and laboratory experience. He also mentors visiting Kane International Traveling Scholars, whose reports describe learning across the operating room, clinics, multidisciplinary care and surgical education.

His educational work extends to international conferences, live surgery workshops and program development. He has also contributed to the textbook Artificial Intelligence in Urology.

He served as a pediatric consulting editor for BJU International from 2013 to 2021. He has also served on hospital and faculty committees addressing perioperative care, operations, faculty development and international engagement.

He contributes to scientific meetings as an invited speaker, moderator, reviewer and surgical educator. His professional societies include the American Urological Association, American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Urology, Society for Pediatric Urology, British Association of Urological Surgeons, European Association of Urology, European Society for Paediatric Urology, Urological Society of India and Endourological Society.
